How to Care for Your Yoga Mat So It Lasts for Years

Oct 21, 2026

Neda Schwanenfeld

A beautiful mat asks very little in return for the practice it supports. Three quiet habits after each session — wipe, dry, roll — and a cool, shaded place to rest will keep its grip, its colour, and its performance for years.

The after-practice ritual

Wipe it down. After every practice, wipe your mat with a soft cloth and a gentle, purpose-built yoga mat cleaner or a diluted vinegar-based solution. That is all it needs. Harsh chemicals, solvents, and abrasive brushes do the opposite of care — they break down the surface and can cause discolouration.

Dry it fully. Always let your mat dry completely before you roll it. Rolling a damp mat traps moisture, and moisture is where spots and odours begin.

Roll it — never fold it. A rolled mat keeps its shape and its surface smooth; a folded one creases. Once dry, roll it and let it rest until your next practice.

Store it cool, dry, and out of sunlight. Direct sun is one of the fastest ways to age a mat. A shaded corner of a calm room is the perfect home.

Why spots appear on natural rubber mats

If your mat is natural rubber, you may notice spots or gentle changes in colour over time. This is a normal process called oxidation — a sign of a natural material living and breathing with your practice, not a flaw.

Spots are most often encouraged by:

  • Sunlight and UV exposure, which speed up oxidation
  • Moisture — rolling the mat damp, or practicing on damp ground
  • Harsh cleaning products, strong disinfectants, or essential oils applied directly to the surface
  • Sweat and body oils, which open-cell materials are designed to absorb
  • Creams and lotions on hands and feet before practice

The ritual above prevents most of it: gentle cleaning, thorough drying, and shaded storage.

Restoring a natural rubber mat

For natural rubber mats, a natural rubber "restore" solution — often vinegar-based — can help return moisture to the material, lift minor discolouration, and maintain grip. Think of it as an occasional deep breath for your mat, alongside the daily ritual.

The short version

Wipe after practice. Dry before rolling. Roll, never fold. Store cool, dry, and shaded. Care for your mat the way you care for your practice — gently, and a little every day.
