How to care for your rubber mat?

Natural rubber yoga mats get spotty. This is a normal process known as oxidation, which causes changes in the mat's color and texture over time and with use.

White spots or discoloration can also appear due to:

Exposure to sunlight/UV rays: Direct sun exposure is a primary cause of premature oxidation and discoloration.
Moisture: Rolling up a wet or damp mat, or practicing on damp ground (like grass), can lead to spots and potential microbial growth.
Improper cleaning products: Washing the mat with unsuitable, harsh products or certain chemicals (like essential oils applied directly, or strong disinfectants) can cause discoloration and break down the material.
Sweat and body oils: The natural substances released from your skin during practice can stain the mat, especially if it's an open-cell material designed to absorb moisture.
Creams and lotions: Oils or lotions on your hands and feet before practice can also cause staining and affect the mat's grip.

How to Prevent and Manage Spots

Proper Cleaning:
Wipe down your mat after every practice with a soft cloth and a gentle, purpose-built yoga mat cleaner or a diluted vinegar-based solution (check manufacturer guidelines).
Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive brushes, as these can damage the rubber.
Thorough Drying: Always ensure your mat is completely dry before rolling it up to prevent moisture-related spots and odors.
Correct Storage: Store your mat in a cool, dry place and keep it out of direct sunlight.

Regular Restoration: For natural rubber mats, using a specific natural rubber mat "restore" solution (often vinegar-based) can help add moisture back to the material, remove minor discoloration, and maintain its grip.
